Illustrative tattoos sit in the space between traditional and realism. They keep the boldness of a drawing — visible linework, textured shading, intentional composition — but allow more freedom in subject and style. Think etchings, storybook illustration, fine-line ink work, woodblock prints.
On the craft
Illustrative is led by drawing. Before we tattoo, we sketch — sometimes many versions — until the composition feels right on paper. Once the drawing works, the tattoo follows naturally. Linework carries most of the design; shading and stippling add depth and texture.
On freedom
This is the style with the widest creative range. Botanical, mythological, surreal, narrative — anything that benefits from a hand-drawn feel works here. It’s also the most collaborative; we’ll usually come back to you with a sketch or two and refine together.
On placement
Illustrative pieces reward thoughtful placement. We design with the shape of your body in mind — letting compositions wrap, breathe, and follow the natural lines of an arm, leg, ribcage, or back.
